English Language Learning / English as a Second Language (PK - 12)

According to a 2002 study from the National Center for Education Statistics, of the 41 percent of teachers nationwide with ELL students in their classrooms, only 12.5 percent participated in eight or more hours of professional development related to ELL.

The WGU Teachers College has structured the ELL programs to meet the requirements of state and federal standards for ELL. The programs also adhere to Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) standards. There are 42 states where the WGU program could lead to an endorsement in ELL or ESL. Many other states that don't offer a specific endorsement in ELL or ESL are nonetheless highly motivated to hire qualified ELL teachers.

    Endorsement Preparation Program - Online

WGU's online ELL endorsement preparation program is a great investment. The Endorsement Preparation Program in ELL is a stand-alone program covering multiple dimensions of English language learning and pedagogy. This program is designed for currently licensed elementary and secondary school teachers who desire to be licensed to teach in ELL or ESL settings. With this endorsement, you will become highly qualified in ELL or ESL, increase your career opportunities, earn re-licensure points, and possibly become eligible for lane changes leading to increased salary.

The ELL/ESL Endorsement Prep Program is designed for:

    • Licensed teachers with bachelor's degrees who are interested in ELL or ESL instruction.
    • Community college teachers who work in ELL or ESL settings.
    • District instructional personnel and curricula leaders.
    • "Emergency credentialed" ELL or ESL teachers who need the endorsements to be considered highly qualified.

Important: This program is not for those who want to learn to speak and write the English language. This program is also not for those interested in becoming English teachers or teaching English in a foreign country. The program can lead to an endorsement in ELL or ESL, but only in those states that have such endorsements. (see list of states with ESL / ELL endorsements)

Courses in the ELL/ESL Endorsement Prep Program include:

    • Education Without Boundaries
    • Language Production, Theory and Acquisition

    Western Governors University

WGU was founded by the governors of 19 U.S. states. At no other time in the history of higher education have the governors of several states joined together to create a university. WGU is also supported by over 20 major corporations and foundations who believe in WGU’s commitment to producing highly competent graduates.

Western Governors University is an online university driven by a mission to expand access to higher education through online, competency-based degree programs. WGU has flourished into a national university, serving over 12,000 students from all 50 states.

    Learning Format:

Each degree program is developed by a council of experts in the field who define "competencies" students need to possess to graduate. These competencies form the curriculum. You earn your degree through demonstration of skills and knowledge in required subject areas through a series of carefully designed assessments.

Whether it’s through prior experience or just plain hard work (or both), you are able to complete your degree program as soon as you can successfully complete all of the necessary assessments. Since tuition is charged at a flat rate every six months—you pay for time, not per credit hour—if you’re able to finish faster, you can save both time and money.

Learning resources include: textbooks, web-based tutorials, simulations, and online classes.

    Financing Options:

WGU charges tuition at a flat-rate every six months, so you pay for the time, not the credit hours. So, the faster you finish your program, the less it costs.

WGU offers federal financial aid and scholarships.

WGU was honored as a "Top 20 Military Friendly School" for 2008 by Advanced Military Education Magazine. The online degree programs are approved for Veterans Administration (VA) education benefits under the Montgomery GI Bill.

As a non-profit, nationally and regionally accredited university with affordable tuition, WGU is an ideal fit for many tuition reimbursement programs.

    Accreditation:

Western Governors University is the only university to have received simultaneous accreditation by four regional accrediting commissions. Currently, WGU's "home" accrediting commission is the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

WGU is also nationally accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC).

The WGU Teachers College is the first and only online provider of teacher education to receive accreditation from the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
