CLAD and CTEL Certificate FAQs
1. What is a CLAD (Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development) Credential?
The CLAD credential is required by the State of California for teachers who instruct English Language Learners (ELL). The CLAD authorizes two types of ELL instruction: Instruction of English Language Development (ELD) and Specially Designed Academic Instruction Delivered in English (SDAIE).
2. What exactly are the two types of ELL instruction?
English Language Development (ELD) is a content subject area. ELD is instruction appropriate for the level of
language proficiency as identified for each EL student. The instruction is designed to promote the effective and
efficient acquisition of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills of the EL student. This type of instruction
is also known as English as a Second Language (ESL) or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
(TESOL).
Specially Designed Academic Instruction Delivered in English (SDAIE) is an instructional approach designed
to increase the level of comprehensibility of the English language in the content area of the class. The specially
designed content instruction in subject matter, such as math or social science, is presented in English to English
learners in classes which are restricted to instruction in the subject area and grade level of the prerequisite
credential (as applicable).
3. What is a CLAD Certificate Through CTEL? How is it different from CLAD?
The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) has discontinued the acceptance of previously approved coursework leading to the CLAD Certificate. Beginning January 2008, the CLAD Certificate through CTEL coursework program will now authorize instruction for English language development (ELD) and specially designed academic instruction delivered in English (SDAIE) in grades twelve and below, including preschool, and classes organized primarily for adults.
4. Is the CLAD Certificate a teaching credential?
The CLAD Certificate is a supplementary authorization to an existing California teaching credential and cannot be obtained unless you hold the appropriate California credential (see below).
5. What qualifications are required to obtain a CLAD Certificate Through CTEL via university-level coursework?
Applicants must satisfy all of the following requirements at the time of application to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC):
- Possess a valid California teaching credential
- Successfully complete coursework in a CTC-approved program
6. Do I need to take a test at the end?
No, completing the coursework will allow you to be certified to teach English learners in a K-12 setting.
7. Am I eligible to apply for the CLAD or CTEL Certificate Program if I am not currently a full-time classroom teacher?
Yes, as long as you have a valid California teaching credential.
