Emergency management consists of a broad selection of professionals in the public and private sectors, who take control and expedite plans during times of disaster. In recent years, the demand for specialized emergency managers and personnel has increased. Although emergency management has typically been seen as a public sector career, many corporations, universities, and hospitals hire emergency managers (aka continuity planner or business recovery planner). Disaster losses have doubled and tripled in each of the past couple decades and disaster response has become increasingly complex, so trained and educated emergency management professionals are in demand.

Job opportunities are increasing as this field evolves and many current professionals approach retirement. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the number emergency management specialists to increase 28% (about 14,000) from 2002 to 2012. Salaries in the field vary, typically reflecting the level of risk in a particular region and an employee’s education and experience. County directors of emergency management are typically paid $60,000 to $70,000 a year, with salaries in disaster-prone areas closer to $100,000 and more.

Emergency Management - BS
UMUC's Emergency Management program develops the knowledge, skills and abilities needed for leadership in emergency management, with a focus on disaster prevention, planning, preparedness, response, mitigation and recovery. The curriculum covers needs and issues, operations management, planning and response and terrorism and is designed to provide students with a global outlook, interpersonal skills and emergency management knowledge and skills. Students are prepared for management positions in emergency management in government and industry or for graduate study in emergency management, homeland security or management and leadership. Coursework may also fill requirements related to the National Fire Protection Association Standard on Disaster/ Emergency Management and Business Continuity Programs (1600), qualification as a Certified Emergency Manager and other professional association certifications.

Emergency Mgt & Business Community - MS
NJIT's MS EMBC is a highly interdisciplinary degree designed to enhance critical skills and knowledge among private and public sector professionals working in the area of emergency management and business continuity. These professionals have to plan for, react well during, and afterwards analyze situations concerning "business not as usual" within corporations, governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations. The program offers the following specializations: Critical Infrastructure, Computer Engineering, Environmental Science, Information Systems, Homeland Security, and Management.

Emergency Management and Information Assurance - Certificate
This 12-credit program, which focuses on the information systems side of emergency management, is recommended for anyone who is involved or interested in all the phases that occur in the Emergency Preparedness process: planning, training, mitigation, detection, alerting, response, recovery, evaluation, and improvement.

Emergency Management - BS
The Emergency Management program is a bachelors' degree completion program designed for the adult working professional 25 years and older who has completed at least two years of college. The program emphasizes the fundamentals of emergency management while providing an interdisciplinary course of study in the skills and practices of emergency planning and management. The primary purpose of the program is to serve the needs of emergency management professionals to address all aspects of natural and human-caused disasters. Graduates of the program will possess a knowledge and experience-based approach to strategic planning for disaster prevention, reduction, response, and recovery. Candidates for the degree include those working in or desirous of working in emergency management and who have completed academic work in one of several fields including fire protection, emergency medical response, law enforcement, environmental health and safety, and other related fields.
