| Emergency Management, Public Safety
Emergency management consists of a broad selection of professionals in the public and private sectors, who take control and expedite plans during times of disaster.
In recent years, the demand for specialized emergency managers and personnel has increased. Although emergency management has typically been seen as a public sector career, many corporations, universities, and hospitals
hire emergency managers (aka continuity planner or business recovery planner). Disaster losses have doubled and tripled in each of the past couple decades and disaster response
has become increasingly complex, so trained and educated emergency management professionals are in demand.
Job opportunities are increasing as this field evolves and many current professionals approach retirement. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the number emergency management specialists to increase 28% (about 14,000) from 2002 to 2012. Salaries in the field vary, typically reflecting the level of risk in a particular region and an employee’s education and experience. County directors of emergency management are typically paid $60,000 to $70,000 a year, with salaries in disaster-prone areas closer to $100,000 and more. |
