Educational Technology

Instructional technology professionals strive to weave technology into both new and existing curriculum materials, design learning experiences that incorporate the use of technology, or create entire courses for online delivery. The instructional goals vary, but often increase the student's ability to interact with the learning material, see and experience things not otherwise possible (such as in virtual field trips), or streamline the process of assessing a student's learning through the use of online assessments, grading systems, and rubrics.

Education and Training Requirements

Individuals completing a bachelor’s degree in instructional technology will be prepared to work in the private sector as e-learning specialists, training coaches or supervisors, and curriculum specialists. Individuals seeking a bachelor’s degree will become experts on learning theory, technology integration, and various e-learning platforms. These bachelor’s degrees do not lead to K12 teacher certification.

Programs at the master’s level also do not lead to teacher certification, but can often be used to meet continuing education requirements and increase earning potential for educators who already possess a bachelor’s degree and have their teaching credentials. Within the private sector, many corporations require a minimum of a bachelor's degree in instructional design but strongly prefer individuals with a master's degree in this concentration, or a closely related field of study. These programs focus on the application of technology to improve course delivery, streamline assessment methods, and provide greater student participation within the learning environment.

Doctoral level programs are available for education professionals who wish to participate in ongoing educational research and technology development. These professionals often work in colleges and universities, or senior-level management within corporations and private businesses. The fields of study and application are vast, and include healthcare, military, education, and business, just to name a few.

Individuals with a bachelor's degree in instructional technology who do not desire an advanced degree might consider additional certifications. These are offered as certificate programs through colleges and universities. The ASTD offers the Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP) certification through distance learning and on campus programs in certain universities.
