As more parents of child-bearing age enter and remain in the labor force, many will likely be seeking care options for their children. About four out of ten preschool teachers and child care workers are self employed; about 60 percent are found in child care centers and preschools, and about 14 percent work for religious institutions. The remainder work in community organizations and state and local government. About two percent of private industry establishments operate on-site child care centers for the children of employees.

The training and qualifications required of child care workers vary widely by state. Child care workers generally can obtain employment with a high school diploma but certain private firms and publicly funded programs have more demanding training and educations requiremts. Some employers prefer to hire staff with a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or the Certified Childcare Professional certification, or have taken secondary or postsecondary courses. An increasing number of employers require atleast an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education. Further education in Management and Child Education, as well as experience, are generally required for career advancement to Childcare Adminstrator, Manager or Director.

Business Management / Child Development - Applied Associate of Science

Child Development - Bachelor of Science
Walden's BS Degree in Child Development is based on the standards of the National Aassociation for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The unique curriculum incorporates reflection, critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and written communication. This non-licensure bachelor's program allows students to earn their degree online while continuing to work and balance personal commitments. While this non-licensure program is not suited for those who wish to immediately teach in public schools, this program can be a precursor to teacher preparation programs.

Early Childhood Development - A.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies
The Associate of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies (ASIS) with early childhood development emphasis is designed to provide students with the relevant knowledge and skills needed to be a certified professional working with infants, toddlers, pre-school, and kindergarten-aged children in a day care or educational setting. If you are already employed in child care and wish to earn recognized credentials, the ASIS with early childhood development emphasis is also for you.
