    Database Administration
    Associate Degrees

Some smaller companies can accept a two year degree (associate), with the appropriate database certification from either Microsoft or Oracle. Prerequisites for admission into associate degree programs are generally a high school diploma or GED. However it is highly recommended that the student have a strong background in math and computer science in order to succeed. Advanced Placement (AP) courses in high school are excellent for pursuing a career in Database Administration.

Associate degrees can branch into many disciplines of Information Technology, such as networking, network security, application development (both client/server and web-based) and data warehousing to name a few. Those with a desire to go in the direction of Database Administration should do so from the outset. Coursework normally will include Local Area Networking (LAN) and Wide Area Networking (WAN) basics in addition to database theory, including—but not limited to—database creation, operation and security. After earning the associate's degree, many students are eligible to take the major certification courses from Microsoft and Oracle.

Most graduates with an associate degree go on to earn their bachelor degree in computer science with an emphasis on Database Administration or Management Information Systems (MIS).
