Computer Information Systems (CIS) Associate Degrees
An associates degree in Computer Information Systems is a launching pad for entering the Information Technology industry. An associates degree in Computer Information Systems covers the basics of the IT industry and allows branching into other areas of interest through the pursuit of a bachelors degree in the chosen field. For Computer Information Systems, the student will learn about:
- Computer applications (both client/server and web-based)
- Analyzing and implementing technology-based solutions (web site, web application, client/server, etc.)
- Databases and database theory
- Technical and customer support services
- Network administration
- Effective communication
It is not unusual for a holder of an associates degree in Computer Information Systems to later pursue a bachelors degree in a business-related field, such as accounting, marketing, finance, etc. The knowledge gained through an associates degree in Computer Information Systems and a bachelors degree in a business-related field can be beneficial in searching for employment in the IT industry and career advancement.
An individual can choose to take a career path in a specialized area of computer information systems with an associates degree, rather than the full computer information systems undergraduate or graduate degree. A few of these specializations are database administrator, network/computer administrator or systems analyst. The 2010 median salaries, as per the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, for these three example tracks from the Computer Information Systems are:
- Database Administrator: $73,490
- Network/Computer Administrator: $69,160
- Computer Systems Analyst: $77,740
Although it's uncommon for someone with only an associates degree to be found in a management position, it has been done. It requires years of experience and is generally someone who has been “grandfathered” into the position. The generally accepted path to management and advanced positions is to obtain one of the positions mentioned above, then earn a bachelors or masters degree while working.
Certifications are a must in the IT industry. Certifications are based on current levels of experience. So once the individual is in one of the above positions, they can gain the requisite experience to qualify for certain levels of certification.
